Everything you need to know before visiting the Salmonier Nature Park

You may or may not see cute arctic foxes.

Growing up in Nova Scotia, one of my FAVE things to do as a kid was to visit the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park (all my Nova Scotians knows wassup!) Getting out of the city to spend some time observing nature was something I'll always cherish.

So when I moved to Newfoundland, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that NL has it's own "Shubenacadie" - however, this one is called the Salmonier Nature Park!

What exactly is the Salmonier Nature Park?

Well, I'm glad you asked.

Originally established in 1978, the park was initially founded as an environmental educational centre (not a tourist destination!) But over time, people became more & more fascinated at coming face to face with NL's native creatures, plants and environment.

The park also serves as a rehabilitation site for orphaned and injured animals.

With several species of wildlife - from birds, to martens, and even a moose - the Salmonier Nature Park will be your best opportunity to connect with the wildlife of Newfoundland & Labrador on a deeper level.

You can read up more on the history of the park and its current uses here.

How to get there

The park is located on Salmonier Line (in Holyrood), which is approximately 45-50 minutes from St. John's. An easy day trip for sure!

From St. John's, follow the Trans Canada Highway (Route 1) until you reach the exit for Salmonier Line (Route 90). The nature park is right off of Salmonier Line. Easy peasy!

What to expect

Not only are there cute animals to see here, but the 3 kilometre boardwalk trail takes you through a boreal forest landscape that'll make you feel like you're in a LITERAL fairytale. Take that, Disney.

The trail is wheelchair (& stroller) accessible; and the Visitor's Centre includes interpretation displays, washrooms, an information desk, and outdoor picnic seating.

The total time to walk around the entire loop (spending approx 3-5 minutes per enclosure) takes about an hour.

Another amazing fact: admission is 100% completely free!

Due to the current COVID protocols, the trail is one way only; and visitors are expected to remain 6-feet away from others. Passing other visitors on the boardwalk is not permitted (so stay in your own lane, Susan 😅)

Do's & Don'ts

For a full list of the "Do's & Don'ts" of the park, click here (which will bring you right to the official Salmonier Nature Park section of the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador's website).

When my cousin came for a visit a couple of weekends ago, I knew I had to take her to the park!

Luckily, we struck an overcast day (with only a bit of drizzle!), so we were able to enjoy the park to its fullest.

Another thing to realize is you may only see about 80% of the animals in their enclosures during your visit (as the animals mayyy be in their burrows Netflix & Chillin', or, just sleeping 😅). But the experience is still one of my faves!
